A great writeup. I visited Somnathpur a couple of years ago and was fascinated by the lathed pillars. I would love to learn more about the mechanics of it.

Fascinating post. The lathe-turned pillars are something else.

@SM: the temple at Somnathpura is undoubtedly beautiful (notwithstanding ASI’s contribution…) and deserves to be seen by more people. If only they could do something about the interiors. The light fixtures and cameras inside are not a pretty sight.

Lovely description and photos.

Have you had a chance to look at the Somnathpur temple – personally, I regard it as the grand masterpiece, with Belur and Halebid being very good appetizers.
